European Team victory at the Ryder Cup

Equipo europeo con el trofeo de la Ryder Cup

With a very tight score 14 1/2 – 13 ½ the Europeans defeated USA on the 39th Edition of the Ryder Cup. Despite facing a clear downside of 4 points, the visiting team did not lose faith in victory and sought for the miracle.

All the players of the European team appealed to be extra motivated so as to dedicate this victory to their most important reference, Seve Ballesteros. “This is for you”, noted José María Olazabal in tears clearly referring to Seve Ballesteros on the 18th hole live to the TV cameras.

“This is very special, I have never experienced something like this before. Thank you to all the team because they have fought very hard. Though, first of all ? this goes for you Severiano”. He could hardly finish his speech as tears rolled down his face while dedicating this touching memory to his great friend, who passed away last year.

“All the players have given 120% and were prepared to fight hard for victory. For me, it has been incredible. I cannot explain my feelings right now. They have done a great job and I had already told them that victory was at our side. The pairings were balanced and we believed in our capability. This has been the main reason for our achievement”.

Martin Kaymer’s final putt is an indication that European players transform themselves in this competition. Their qualities hatch in this competition where the team spirit is essential to achieve victory. All of them kept up to Seve’s spirit and contributed with their struggle and effort towards victory.

The captain knew that it was critical to win the first games and thus the early and overwhelming victory of Luke Donald, was followed by the extraordinary win of I. Poulter and Justin Rose. Outstanding was also Paul Lawrie’s victory who after thirteen years returned to the Ryder Cup.

Rory Mc Ilroy did not fail to score either and balanced it because the Belgian Colsaerts was unable to win his match. Despite McDowell not being able to win his match, on the last hole Sergio Garcia managed to turn up side down the result of his furious battle against Furyk. It was a turning point. Hanson fought hard until the end which was also important for the team morale. In terms of scoring his match his huge efforts were fruitless however he was in disadvantage against Dufner.

L. Westwood and M. Kaymer proved their worth despite this year’s poor results. Their points were core to keep the Ryder in the European showcases. The German’s last putt made the heart of the Europeans throb but he achieved the dreamt point for his team.
Molinari’s draw achieved the ½ point which gave the win to Europe despite having Tiger Woods as his rival who did not manage to win a match.

Besides having Seve’s silhouette emblazoned on Seve’s golf bag they also had it embroidered on the sleeve of the uniform worn on Sunday. They used the same colors as Severiano wore on the important finals. Blue trousers, white shirt and navy blue pullover.

On Chicago’s sky an emotional memory of Seve was also visible.
