Carmen Ballesteros, Seve’s daughter, visited the National Cancer Research Centre and was welcomed by the director, Mar\u00eda Blasco, who received the funds raised by charity events held in different courses all over Spain, known as Desaf\u00edo Fundaci\u00f3n Seve Ballesteros. On its third edition it was sponsored by Visit Panam\u00e1. On behalf of her brothers and the Seve Ballesteros Foundation, Carmen donated \u20ac100,000 which the CNIO will destine to support brain tumour research in the laboratory of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation Brain Tumor Group.<\/p>\n

During her visit around the facilities at CNIO, Seve’s daughter was accompanied by the centre’s Director Mar\u00eda Blasco, the researchers Massimo Squatrito, Erwin Wagner and Fernando Pel\u00e1ez, and Doctor Cristobal Belda, who explained the progress made in the Biotechnological Program which offers technical support to the CNIO research teams.<\/p>\n

There are nearly 4,000 new cases of brain tumors per year in Spain, the most frequent and aggressive ones being Multiform Glioblastomes affecting the central nervous system in adults. In the Brain Tumor Group at Seve Ballesteros Foundation CNIO, a combination of genomic analysis, mice model and tumor cell cultivation are used to identify the molecular mechanisms that will form the basis of the new therapy development on patients suffering from MGB. The main target of the Team is to discover the genetic disorders that are responsible for the aggressive development of this type of tumours and particularly, identifying those alterations related with DNA damage, a type of response to protect the integrity of the genetic material.<\/p>\n
